<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of prediction based on motion compensation by using motion vectors at the apexes of a polygonal patch existent in an area different from the area to which picture elements belong. SOLUTION: When finding the motion vector of any arbitrary picture element in the polygonal patch, a picture element unit motion vector is found over different areas, namely, while utilizing the apex motion vector existent in the area different from the area, to which this picture element belongs, and reducing the degree of influence rather than the apex motion vector in the same area as this picture element. Since a moving object boundary exists in longitudinal direction concerning polygonal patch (square) DEFG, the influence of apex motion vectors at apexes D and F is reduced concerning the picture element unit motion vector on the right side of a border line and oppositely, the influence of apex motion vectors at apexes E and G is enlarged. Thus, since the distortion at the moving area boundary of the object is decreased while guaranteeing the continuity of motion of adjacent picture elements, no distortion is generated in the predictive image, and the effect of prediction is remarkably improved.</p> |
