PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conduct proper interpolation realizing smoothness even with respect to an edge at a shallow angle by deciding an interpolation direction based on correlation between pieces of block data consisting of sets of reference picture element data. SOLUTION: A CPU reads picture element data A(-4)-A(4) and C(-4)-C(4) from a frame memory. Reference picture element data P(-8)-P(8) and Q(-8)-Q(8) are generated by interpolating image data consisting of averaged data of adjacent image data between the adjacent image data. Three consecutive reference picture element data P, Q each are used for one block and an inter-block correlation value is calculated from a sum of differences of the blocked reference picture element data with respect to k(=-7-7). The value (k) providing a minimum inter-block correlation value is decided as an optimum interpolation direction. An interpolation picture element data B(0) is obtained by calculating an equation B(0)=(P(k)+Q(-k))/2 with the value (k). |
