The fuel injection valve (4) is fitted in the cylinder head and is angled to inject the fuel in front of the spark plug (3). The cylinder head has a shaped duct between the injection valve and the cylinder. The inlet opening (13) is angled to enter the cylinder between the injection valve and the spark plug. The shaped duct is tapered with the wider end into the cylinder. The angle of the taper is optimised for the fuel flow pattern. A short, steeper passage section (62) connects the bottom end of the main passage section (63) with the bore (80) holding the injection valve.
