PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent leaking of light from the interface between liquid crystal areas when voltage is applied, to make a light-shielding part unnecessary and to obtain a liquid crystal display device with high contrast by forming two kinds of areas having the same twisting direction of liquid crystal molecules and opposite rising directions from each other when the same voltage is applied and by forming an area having the opposite twisting direction of liquid crystal molecules between the two areas. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device consists of two substrates 23, 33 having electrodes 22, 32, and a liquid crystal layer held between the substrates. The liquid crystal layer has two kinds of areas A, B having the same twisting direction of the alignment vectors of the liquid crystal and opposite rising directions of liquid crystal molecules 11 from each other when voltage is applied. Further, another area C having the different direction of the alignment vector of a liquid crystal from that of the two regions A, B is formed between the two areas A, B. To make this structure stable, it is preferable that the liquid crystal layer contains polymers between >=0.02wt.% and <=4wt.%. Thereby, when voltage is applied to produce a black display, the liquid crystal molecules 11 in the interface area C change the orientation direction along the electric field and become perpendicular to the substrate 23, 33 to give a black screen.
