The modification of stationary chromatographic substrate phases containing silanol or silanol groups with calixarene comprises reacting the silanol groups with a dialkylsilane of formula HSi(R)2XR, and then coupling an olefinic group in the calixarene of formula (II) to the modified substrate by heterogeneous hydrosilylation in the presence of noble metal catalyst(s); in which n = 3-12; R' = H, OR, SR, NR2 or N<+>R3; R" = H, R, OR, SR, NR2 or N<+>R3; R"' = H, R, OR, SR, NR2, N<+>R3, COR, COOR, CONR2, N=NR or SO3R; Z = CR2, ROR, SiR2, O, S and/or NR; R = H, (un)saturated (cyclo)alkyl, optionally containing hetero-atom(s), or optionally condensed (hetero)aryl, optionally substituted by (un)saturated alkyl and/or aryl groups, which may contain hetero-atoms), or halogen; R' and/or R"' must contain vinyl (CH=CH2) groups.
