PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a recording/reproducing method by which the state of atoms and molecules are used as a recording unit. SOLUTION: A solid having physical structures equipped with energy level structures consisting of 3 or higher energy levels as a recording medium is used. When the quantity of the physical structures contained in the solid is defined as N, described three levels of the (i)th physical structure as a 1st, 2nd and 3rd levels, (h) as the planck's constant, energy of the 1st level as hωi1 /2π, energy of the 2nd level as hωi2 /2π, energy of the 3rd level as hωi3 /2π, when denoting|ω13 -ωi1|asωi31 ,|ω13 -ωi2|asωi32 and|ω12 -ωi1|asωi21 , information is recorded in the recording medium by changing the distribution of (ωi31 ,ωi32 ) in N pices of the physical structure, and the information is reproduced by detecting the distribution of (ωi31 ,ωi32 ) or the distribution ofω21 .
