A process is claimed for producing, over the display field of a data display device, a data input device which has a visible light-transparent conductive layer on one or both surfaces of a visible light-transparent flat support. The process involves (a) applying the conductive layer over the entire surface of the support; and (b) producing a conductor structure in the conductive layer by means of focussed high energy (preferably laser) radiation which has a wavelength tuned to the support and conductive layer materials or which has a tuned wavelength range such that the wavelength or wavelength range lies in the region of a spectral absorption maximum of the conductive layer but beyond spectral absorption maxima of the support. Preferably, the support is a glass plate or a plastic (especially polyethylene) foil, the conductive layer is an ITO layer and the high energy radiation has a wavelength of 1.04-1.08 microns or 120-350 nm.
