PURPOSE:To easily obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals, etc., in high yield on an industrial scale at a low cost by using a specific inexpensive compound as a catalyst effective at reduced amount and reacting 1,2,3-trichloropropane with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. CONSTITUTION:1-2-3-Trichloropropane containing 3, 6, 9 or 12 halogen compounds as impurities, having a purity of 65-80% and available as a by- product of epichlorohydrin production process is made to react with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide having a concentration of >=12% at -10-+30 deg.C for 1-5-hr in the presence of 0.1-3.0mol% (based on 1,2,3-trichloropropane) of benzyltriethyl ammonium chloride as a catalyst. The reaction product is separated into layers and the oil layer is purified by simple distillation to obtain the objective compound having a purity of >=98%. |
