PURPOSE:To obtain an optical active module which functions as a high-power and high-sensitivity optical transmitting and receiving module by connecting a pigtail optical fiber to which a rare earth element is added to one terminal of a waveguide equipped with an exciting light source. CONSTITUTION:The pigtail optical fiber 6 to which the rare earth element is added is connected to the output terminal of a transmission line in a waveguide 1 with the light emitting element for exciting light to which a rare earth element is added and the light signal of the light emitting element 5 for the exciting light is propagated in a transmission line 2 and the pigtail optical fiber 6. Further, this optical active module includes a light emitting element 4 for signal light transmission, a light receiving element, a multiplexing and demultiplexing element, a coupler, etc., in a glass waveguide. Namely, the waveguide has both a function for transmitting signal light and exciting line one over the other and a function for amplifying the signal light and the rare-earth-element added pigtail fiber also functions to amplify the signal light. Thus, the waveguide and pigtail fiber are both provided with the amplifying function, so the high-output and high-sensitivity optical active module can be obtained. |
