A method of screening 16 an open topped overflow channel 10 to restrict the passage of solids from a sewer into an overflow. The screening 16 comprises a plurality of hanging screens 18 of deflectable strips in the form of flat flexible blades 20, each screen extending across the full width of the overflow entry 14. In use, the blades 20 hang down from the level of the overflow entry 14 and in overflow or near overflow conditions become deflected by the flow in the channel 10 to encourage solid matter to slide from the screen back into the flow. The deflection causes the blades 20 to be brought into overlapping engagement with each other. Upon the overflow conditions subsiding the blades 20 drop down to hang more vertically. The spacing between the screens 18 is less than the length of the blades 20 and each blade hangs independently from a top rail 22.
