At this time, when the liquid pressure inside an upper liquid chamber A increases over the set load of a spring 39, a compression-stroke damping force varying mechanism 33 works to have the liquid inside the liquid chamber B substitutionally flows into the reservoir chamber D together with the generating means 24, whereby generating a compression-stroke damping force. Said variable mechanism 33 regulates the compression- stroke damping force, responding to the liquid pressure inside the liquid chamber A, said pressure increasing a long with increase in piston speed when the piston 2 moves at higher speed. The liquid inside the liquid chamber B forces a check valve 9 to open to allow liquid flow into the liquid chamber A, on account of which no cavitation in the upper liquid chamber is produced and wider range of damping force can be provided.
