Sepn. of volatile components from solid mixts., esp. floor coverings, building rubble or sludge, having an initial moisture content of 1 - 30 mass %, comprises (1) transporting the mixt. a prod. inlet and outlet through a sealed treatment area where it comes into contact with indirectly heated surfaces, during which it is thoroughly mixed and heated to max. 400 deg.C ; (2) passing a flow of carrier vapour at constant temp. through the mixt. perpendicular to the direction of transport, between the inlet and outlet; and (3) allowing the carrier vapour loaded with volatile components to condense and opt. return to the mixt. The mass and energy of the carrier vapour flow varies along the entire mixt. treatment length between the prod. inlet and outlet.
