A nuclear fuel element comprises a plurality of rectangular sheets of clad fissile material (e.g. uranium oxide in Al, Zr, Nb, Be, steel) each sheet having parallel corrugations inclined to its sides, stacked with corrugations on adjacent sheets touching and running across each other. The sheets are held in a tubular container, with open ends for the passage of coolant, the planes of the sheets being parallel to the direction of flow of coolant, and rest on a lip 11a. In Fig. 5, four stacks are shown in one container, successive stacks having the planes of their sheets at right angles to each other. |
