<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a porous gel-like material comprising an organic polymer and water, having one or more specific opening portions, remarkably improving the habitability of microorganisms and also improving effectiveness as a microorganism carrier for the treatment of waste water. SOLUTION: This material comprises (A) 1-30wt.% organic polymer (a polyvinyl alcohol-based polymer is preferable) and (B) >=60wt.% water, and has one or more specific opening portions per 100μm square of the surface of the same material, where the major axis of each opening portion is 1-50μm long. The objective gel-like material is obtained by adding (C) 0.1-30wt.% water-insoluble solid material to an aqueous solution or dispersion of the component A to form a hydrous gel, and simultaneously or then dissolving or removing the component C. The component C is preferably a biodegradable solid material or a solid material capable of being dissolved or degraded with an acidic solution of <=pH5 or an alkaline solution of >=pH9.</p> |
