The invention provides various novel acetal and aldehyde-containing monomers and polymers prepared therefrom with ethylenically unsaturated monomers. The novel monomers are selected from the group consisting of 2¢2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-ethoxy!ethyl methacrylate; N-methyl, N-(2,2-dimethoxy)ethyl, N,N-diallylammonium bromide; 2-(5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl)ethoxyethyl acrylate; N-¢2-(5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl)ethyl! acrylamide; ¢1-(5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl!-2-propyl acrylate; 3-¢N-methyl, N-(2,2-dimethoxy)ethyl!-amino-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate; and N,N-dimethyl, N-¢3-(2-dioxolan-2-yl) ethoxyethoxy-2-hydroxyl!propyl methacrylamidopropylammonium chloride or which has the structure <IMG> , where R' is an ethylenically unsaturated group and A an A' are independently a lower alkyl or A and A' together form at least a 5-membered cyclic acetal, or which has the structure <IMG> where R' is an ethylenically unsaturated group.
