PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically measure the length and the diameter of the tapered axial hole of a chucked roll on which a printing plate is to be prepd. and to utilize them for handling thereafter the roll on which the printing plate is to be prepd. SOLUTION: A roll R on which a printing plate is to be prepd. is chucked by means of chuck cones 1 and 2 and a distance L0 between roll end face sensors 3a and 4a, a standard distance (z) from the top point P of a chuck cone 1 to the roll end face sensor 3a and the conical angleαdeg. of the chuck cone 1 are measured in advance. In addition, measurements with a pair of the roll end face sensors 3a and 4a are started from the waiting positions and the measurements are stopped when the end faces of the roll R on which the printing plate is to be prepd. are detected and the distances (x) and (y) of movement of each roll end face sensor 3a and 4a are measured and the length L1 of the roll on which the printing plate is to be prepd. is calculated from an equation L1=L0-(x+y) and the diameter (d) of the axial hole of the roll R on which the printing plate is to be prepd. is calculated from an equation d=2×(z-x)×tan(αdeg.×1/2) to transfer data of L1 and (d) to a mechanical apparatus and to utilize them for handling.
