PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the consumption of ink or the lowering of a printing speed caused by the empty emitting operation for preventing the clogging of the nozzle orifices of a recording head not participated in printing. SOLUTION: This ink jet recording apparatus is constituted of a plurality of recording heads 7, 8, cap members 31, 32 individually sealing the respective recording heads 7, 8 and a control means emitting ink droplets from the recording heads 7, 8 on the basis of printing data during a printing period and interrupting printing to perform the ink emitting capacity keeping operation of a nozzle orifice row and performing emission restoring operation sealing the nozzle orifice row by the cap members 31, 32 to allow negative pressure to act to forcibly discharge ink droplets from nozzle orifices. In this case, a maintenance control means 70 setting the stop of printing operation and the stop of ink emitting capacity keeping operation to one of the recording heads 7, 8 during a printing period is provided. By selecting the recording head not participated in printing by a mode setting means 80, the recording heads are set to a stop state and empty emission for preventing the drying of nozzle orifices is stopped. |
