The steering system has the steering column movements overlaid by a controlled servo system (10) and passed to the variable effect steering box (14). This provides an increasing ratio for increasing steering deflection, resulting in increasing steering reaction forces. The servo steering effect, added to the manual steering force, is dependant on the steering deflection and on the vehicle speed.
