The method involves defining a scan sequence for the image points in an image segment. A covariance matrix is determined for the image points corresp. to the scan sequence and the image transformation matrix is formed from the covariance matrix by determining its eigne vectors. The image points are associated with brightness and/or colour values, from which an image point vector is formed according to the scan sequence. The image point vector is transformed into a de-correlated image point vector using the image transformation matrix.
