The reels (3,5) are arranged with their axes (9,11) parallel to each other and interconnected by two compression springs (17). The cable (7) is wound in a number of loops around both reels with the maximum distance between their axes, while the springs are slack. When an operator pulls on the free end of the cable, the axis (11) of one reel slides in its guide (13) until a maximum length is paid out and the axes are at minimum spacing. The desired length of exposed cable can be maintained by the tightening of a clamp (15) with a laterally movable rack (21).
