An apparatus for the photometric analysis of sample substances in liquid form comprises a position indexed rotating table (1) for the sample containers (2) and a second rotating table (3) also indexed for the reaction vessels (30) which are examined in turn by a wide-spectrum photometer (12). A carousel (4) provides locations for the reagent containers (33) which are bar-coded for reader (3) identification and arranged in two consecutive rings having independent rotation in both directions. A carousel cover (9) has a motorised access door (10) for the exchange of reagents and is pierced to accept the swivelling pipettes (5a, 5b). An automated test sequence employs the pipettes (5a, 5b) and (6) for transferring successive samples and reagents to the reaction vessels (30) for their examination.
