DEAROMATISATION OF AROMATIC ORGANO-HALOGENATED AND/OR ORGANO-OXYGENATED COMPOUNDS IN THE PRESENCE OF A RUTHENIUM CATALYST

A method for the dearomatisation and hydrodehalogenation of aromatic organo-halogenated and/or organo-halogenated and oxygenated compounds is disclosed. The method may advantageously be used to remove pollutants from effluents containing polychlorodiphenyl compounds such as pyralene, mono- and polychlorophenols, mono- and polychloro anilines and polychlorodioxins. The method comprises catalytically hydrogenating said compounds dissolved or suspended in a preferably alkaline aqueous solution, using hydrogen at a pressure of 1-20 bars, in contact with a ruthenium catalyst and at temperatures between room temperature and 100 DEG C.
