A method of cleaning interproximal tooth surfaces comprises alternating the flossing of the lower teeth and the upper teeth in separate flossing sessions. A preferred embodiment is to floss the lower teeth on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and the upper teeth on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays or Sundays. An alternative embodiment is to floss the upper and lower teeth on alternate days, irrespective of the day of the week. The invention also includes a dental floss dispenser (12) to help users remember to floss properly according to the method of the instant invention. The floss dispenser (12) includes six cutters (18) and a memory aid in the form of day-of-the-week identifiers (20) next to each cutter (18) to remind the user which teeth to floss on which day. Arrows (22) are provided to facilitate proper movement from cutter (18) to cutter (18).
