A tailgate lift assembly includes a main frame (1) which is connected directly to the vehicle on which the lift is to be used. A dual output hydraulic rotary actuator (31) is supported within the main frame (1) and is connected by means of shafts (33A, 33B) at either end to a set of hinge arms (35A, 35B) which are in turn connected to the lift platform (87). The shafts (33A, 33B) protrude from either end of the rotary actuator (31), thus allowing the lifting torque to be applied substantially equally to both sides of the lifting platform (87) and thereby providing a compact system capable of being located completely within the main frame.
