PURPOSE:To reduce the burden on a navigating device by changing a map matching pattern to be most suitable for a road on which a motor vehicle is running at present. CONSTITUTION:A signal DM indicating the running direction of a motor vehicle generated from a terrestrial magnetism sensor 11 and a signal REV indicating the running distance obtained by a speed sensor 12 are inputted to an operating circuit 16. In the operating circuit 16, the position of the motor vehicle is presumed and the presumed position is temporarily stored in a RAM 17. A map showing the neighborhood is taken out from a map data memory means 13. A map matching is regularly conducted. When the map matching is not done (or is done), the detected presumed position (or the position matched on the map of the presumed position) is displayed on a screen of an indicator 14. Matching patterns suitable for each kinds of roads are set in advance in the map data. During the actual running, a map matching pattern suitable for the running road is selected, according to which matching of the road is performed. Thus, not only the burden on the device can be reduced, but the matching accuracy can be maintained. |
