In one embodiment, a compound bearing assembly comprises a stepped-diameter shaft (1) having a larger-diameter portion (1a) formed with an inner raceway groove (2a). Balls (4) are located between the inner raceway groove (2a) and an outer raceway groove (2b) in an outer race ring (3). A separate spacer sleeve (5) is mounted on the shaft, and at one axial end engages an end face of the outer race ring (3). A second outer raceway groove (6b) is formed in the opposite end of the sleeve (5), and balls (8a) are located between the latter raceway groove (6b) and an inner raceway groove (6b) formed in an inner race ring (7a) mounted on the smaller-diameter portion (1b) of the shaft. The ring (7a) is fixed to the shaft portion (1b) so as to pre-load the bearing assembly. The components are pre-assembled into a compound bearing assembly by a bearing manufacturer with a high degree of accuracy, to enable a user to be free from the cumbersome work of assembling rotatable portions, or a cylindrical rotary shaft and its associated bearing means, of a computer and/or its peripheral devices. In use, the compound bearing assembly is coaxially mounted in the cylindrical rotary shaft or the like by the user, to rotatably support the cylindrical rotary shaft or the like in the computer or its peripheral devices. <IMAGE> |
