PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce acetophenones which are an intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals in high yield by separately reacting specific three compounds containing a partially new compound as starting raw materials with bromine. SOLUTION: Partially new 1-substituted phenylethanols of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are each H, a halogen, trifluoromethyl, nitro or cyanol, with the proviso that R<1> and R<2> are not simultaneously II) are reacted with bromine. Otherwise,α-bromoethylbenzenes of formula II are reacted with the bromine in the presence of at least one of a base and a phase-transfer catalyst and water or ethylbenzenes of formula III are reacted with the bromine in the presence of at least one of the base and phase-transfer catalyst and water. The three reactions are carried out to thereby afford acetophenones of formula IV (R<3> is methyl or bromomethyl). An alkali metallic hydroxide or an alkali metallic salt is preferably used as the base. A quaternary ammonium salt is preferably used as the phase-transfer catalyst.
