PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst, which is suitable for allowing benzene to react with a >=9C aromatic hydrocarbon compound to convert to toluene useful as a gasoline base material and an 8C aromatic hydrocarbon compound and has high activity, small deterioration of catalyst and high selectivity, and the converting method. SOLUTION: Benzene and the >=9C aromatic hydrocarbon compound in a raw material oil having a specific b.p. range are converted to toluene and the 8C aromatic hydrocarbon compound by using the catalyst prepared by carrying a metal or its compound selected from group VIII metals and group VIA metals in Periodic table on a carrier containing zeolite having 0.6-1.0nm max. narrow pore diameter of micro narrow pore and the SiO2 /Al2 O3 ratio of <50.
