PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an antitumor medicinal composition containing xanthatin. SOLUTION: This antitumor medicinal composition contains xanthatin represented by the formula as an active ingredient. Xanthatin is a sort of ingredients contained in fruit of Xanthium strumarium and obtained by extracting leaf of Xanthium strumarium with ethanol and concentrating the extracted solution and adding ether to the concentrate and extracting the concentrate with ether and evaporating the extracted solution to dryness and fractionating and purifying the resultant residue with n-hexane-ethyl acetate. The xanthatin has the following properties. Appearance, colorless needle-like crystal; melting point, 103-105 deg.C; IR (KBr), 1762cm<-1> (lactom), 1686cm<-1> (ketone); EI-MS: C15 H18 O3 (246.1266); [α]D=-8.0 deg. (1.0, CHCl3 ),<1> H-NMR (400MHZ, CDCl3 ), etc. The xanthatin is administered once to 3 times per day in an amount of 10-100 mg/time.adult (70kg) in the case of oral administration or once to 3 times per day in an amount of 1-10 mg in the case of the parenteral administration.
