PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lower power consumption in an electronic device such as a video cassette recorder for instance. SOLUTION: A switch 2 is opened by a microcomputer 13 when a power source is turned off to supply electric power to the microcomputer 13 and a light receiving part 14 from a backup element 12. The charging of the element 12 is intermittently performed by the control of the switch 2 with the microcomputer 13. When the power source is turned off, the microcomputer 13 operates in a low power consumption operation mode in which the function of its part is stopped and a sleep mode of slow clock and a subclock operation mode are repeated. The operation mode can be returned to the usual operation by interrupt processing to the microcomputer 13 by means of an indication by a remote control or a key, timer reservation operation or the like.
