PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition containing a specific rubber, sulfur, azodicarbonamide and a specific dithiocarbamic acid salt, having long leading time in vulcanization and high vulcanization rate and useful for the production of a sponge rubber having high expansion ratio and high water-absorptivity. SOLUTION: This rubber composition contains (A) an ethylene-α-olefin- nonconjugated diene copolymer rubber (e.g. a copolymer wherein the (α-olefin is propylene or butene and the nonconjugated diene is 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene or its combination with dicyclopentadiene), (B) sulfur, (C) azodicarbonamide and (D) a sodium dialkyldithiocarbamate having a 1-6C alkyl group (e.g. sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate or sodium di-nbutyldithiocarbamate) and, as necessary, (E) a foaming assistant such as urea.
