PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an optically active glycol derivative useful for a raw material of optically active liquid crystal compound which is a ferroelectric liquid crystal substance, and for an intermediate for a medicine such as an antibiotic. SOLUTION: An optically active compound having a carbonyl group is reacted with a glycol having either an optically active center or a prochiral center and containing a structure represented by the formula under the existence of an acid catalyst (e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid). The opticaly active glycol is obtained by following separation of the objective product by distillation, etc., and further hydrolysis of the product. A cycloaliphatic ketone as the optically active compound having the carbonyl group and 3-chloropropanediol as the glycol having the optically active center are exemplified. |
