Preparation of 1-(2,4-dialkoxy-1,3,5-triazin-6-yl)-pyrenes (I) comprises (a) reacting an alcoholate of the formula MOR; M = an alkali metal; R = optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl; with an acid in an organic solvent; and (b) reacting the reaction product with 1-(2,4-dichloro-1,3,5-triazin-6-yl)-pyrene (II).
