The method involves processing actual GPS position data and static data carried in the vehicle, and/or data derived from driver-vehicle systems, to form a parameter which is used to control the operation of at least one device or system in the vehicle. The parameter is be used to control the gear-change program of a stepped or stepless automatic transmission of a passenger vehicle or agricultural vehicle. The data derived form driver-vehicle systems may include information about the driving conditions: town, country, motorway, flat, hills, stop, go, jam, bend etc.
