A solid electrolyte is drawn through a fuel cell and used electrolyte does not remain in the cell. The feed motor for the electrolyte (6) is wired in series with the load since the current is used as a measure of the feed rate. A porous insulator (20) receives the liquid sodium so that metal does not run out when there is no electrolyte in the cell. A thermal machine (21) is operated at the hot part of the heat exchanger to use surplus process heat. It is also operated at the cold part of the exchanger. A counterflow heat exchanger (10,11) is driven by the pump(14) to preheat the electrolyte up to the operating temperature.
