The automatic filling device comprises a pipe (6) which can be hinged about a flexible joint (9) at the inlet end of the pipe. The pipe is hinged by a thermally operated drive which consists of a temperature sensor, a connecting pipe and an actuator which moves a pushrod. The flexible joint connects the filling pipe to the inlet stump. A temperature sensor, at the end of the inlet tube, measures the temperature of the layer into which the water is being discharged. The position of the filling pipe is dependent on the temperature of the water from the solar heater. When the solar heating plant has been out of use for some time, the infeed pipe will dip right down.
