Device for protecting a sloping surface (20) against erosion, which is expandable from a collapsed state into an expanded, cellular body state, and comprises a plurality of oblong panels (32) which overlap in the collapsed state. Each of the panels (32) has top and bottom edges, and every two neighboring panels are connected to each other by a plurality of mutually spaced, parallel connecting zones each extending between the top and the bottom edges and each forming an acute angle with the bottom edges. The panels overlap in the fully collapsed state, whereby when expanded into the cellular body state the device comprises a plurality of prismatic cells (36) with rhomboidal side walls.
