The device has at least one lighting body (17) in the room (2) to be illuminated and a light projector (4) outside the room. At least one flexible plastic, single strand light conducting cable (5) emanates from the projector. The light conducting cable has an end in the form of an unpolished cut surface and is introduced in the room via an aperture in the wall to form a lighting body. The projector has a box (8) contg. a lamp (7) with supply and control devices and with a coupling (9) for the light conducting cable.
