The printer has a number of character generators (10) spaced along the surface of a photoconductor (14), each incorporating a feed channel (40) and a return channel (48) for a heat transfer fluid, extending in its longitudinal direction. The feed and return channels of the successive character generators are connected in series, to form a closed circulation path for the heat transfer fluid which is circulated via a pump (62).
