The method of processing the grit content of a calcium hydroxide suspension, produced by slaking lump lime, involves: (a) returning the unburnt portion (14) of the lump lime (10), retained after passage through the slaking unit (4), to the entry (3) of the slaking unit (4); (b) introducing the unburnt fraction (14) together with lump lime (10) and slaking water (11) into the slaking unit (4) so that the grit (15) is comminuted in the slaking unit (4); and (c) discharging part of the unburnt portion (14) after enrichment from the slaking unit (4).
