The microtome has a first carrier (5 or 15) arranged at the base frame (2) for holding a cutting knife (6) or a specimen (14). A micro-feed mechanism (7) is arranged in the direction of the Y-axis at the base frame lying opposite the first, and has a first and a second feed unit (8,9), which can be shifted inversely to each other in two directions across the Y-axis, with a small cutting angle (2 ETA ). So that a feed is effected with a very small step value in the direction of the X-axis. A second carrier (15,5) is arranged at the micro-feed mechanism lying opposite the first carrier, to hold the other object, which is either the specimen or the cutting knife.
