In the method of controlling the focus position of a photo-magnetic disc device, when the user selects the reproducing mode, a counter is reset, and the focus raises by increasing a driving current of a focus coil. Thereafter, it is judged whether a cross signal is input into a focus detecting signal and a focus material. In such a case, the counter counts on by one. Thereby, a laser light is focused on a reflecting surface of the photo-magnetic disc, and a object lens 24B is lowered to a predetermined position. Thereafter, it is judged whether a cross signal is input into a focus detecting signal and a focus material, and in such a case, it is focused at the predetermined position.
