The invention concerns an achromatic phase lagging component in which a plurality of liquid crystal layers are disposed in succession and by means of which in particular the state of polarisation of light at various wavelengths is to be monitored. The achromatic phase lagging component should enable the state of polarization to be uniformly influenced in a broad spectral range and it should be possible to produce said component simply and economically and such that it is sufficiently large. The liquid crystal layers (LC1-LCk) of the phase lagging component are formed from different liquid crystals, the rapid axes of the liquid crystal layers (LC1-LCk) being oriented parallel and/or perpendicular to one another.
