<p>An impact resistant pressure operated relief valve comprising a valve body (12) having an exhaust port (23) and a nozzle assembly having a flow passage (25) which terminates in an enlarged opening (26) surrounded by an annular valve seat (27). A disc holder (29) in the valve body (12) is slidably disposed between a closed position abuting the valve seat (27), thus closing the nozzle passage and a second position in which the disc holder (29) is displaced from the valve seat (27), thus opening the valve port to the nozzle passage. A compression spring (40) forces the disc holder (29) to the normally closed position. The lower portion of the disc holder (29) is provided with a valve disc (27) having a facing surface which is adapted to contact the valve seat (27) in the closed position. The invention further comprises compressible shock absorber means interposed between the disc (34) and the disc holder (29). The shock absorber (56) functions to lessen the shock forces involved when the valve disc (34) impacts upon the valve seat (27) at closing. This permits the use of a narrow valve seat which provides a high unit load on between the disc (34) and the valve seat (27) and achieves a high degree of seat tightness.</p> |
