Class 34(1) A calendar roll comprises a hollow cylinder, hollow end journals, a shell with end members within the cylinder, a plurality of fluid passages between the shell and the cylinder wall, extending lengthwise of the cylinder and means within the journals and extending from the end members of the shell to conduct fluid introduced through the fluid passages and into one of the journals in one direction and within the shell for the return flow in the opposite direction. The roll end journals 11, 12 are secured to the cylinder 10 by screws 13 The shell 14 has end heads 17, 18 set into it and the projecting ends of the shell have notches 21 to provide ports for the circulating fluid. The shell is tapered and fluid is passed along channels formed by external helical guiding ribs 20 from the smaller to the larger end. The fluid is returned through a pipe 16 supported in a disclike member 23 and the shell head 18 and leaves the shell through a pipe 15 fastened to the head 17. The outer end of the roll bearing 12 is closed by a plug 22. In another form, the shell is cylindrical and the progressive change in the area of the passage between the guiding ribs is produced by decreasing the width of the channels.
