Vacuum cleaner with improved suction inlet

A vacuum cleaner (10,200) with a floor travelling head (14) having a housing (18), a rotatable brush (40), and two motors (20,22). The housing (18) has a suction inlet (62) with an entrance at its bottom and a separate pocket (46) in the bottom of the housing for the rotatable brush (40). A wall (64) of the housing (18) separates the pocket (46) from the suction inlet (62) such that the entrance to the suction inlet (62) has a relatively small area to maximise vacuum pull at the entrance. The suction inlet (62) has a lower section (66) with straight wall sections (76) that are angled to form smaller areas at the lateral ends of the suction inlet. The suction inlet (62) has an exit aperture (72) directly into a collection assembly (28) such that air velocity increases from the lower section (66) to the upper section (68) and then decreases from the upper section (68) into the collection assembly (28). <IMAGE>
