Preparation of stable, low-viscosity graft copolymer dispersions (I) comprises (a) mixing a base polyol containing at least 2 wt.% of a primary hydroxyl group-containing polyol (II) with an olefinically unsaturated compound (III) containing groups which can react with primary OH groups, and (b) carrying out radical-initiated polymerisation with unsaturated comonomers (IV). Also claimed are stable, low-viscosity dispersions (I) obtained by this process. Preferred (III) are unsaturated cyclic or acyclic anhydrides, acid chlorides and/or epoxides. Polyol (II) contains at least one primary OH group per mol., and the preferred base polyol is a polyether-polyol containing at least 2 OH groups, with a functionality of 1-6 and an OH number of 10-100. Monomers (IV) comprise styrene (S) and/or acrylonitrile (AN), preferably a mixt. of S and AN in a wt. ratio of (20:80)-(80:20), especially (25:75)-(75:25). |
