PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element with which low resistance and high transmittance are stably assured and which has excellent surface flatness, high workability and excellent display characteristics by using transparent conductive films essentially consisting of specific indium oxide and/or tin oxide as display electrodes. SOLUTION: Two sheets of a pair of glass substrates 2 facing each other are coated with the transparent electrodes 3 which consist essentially of the indium oxide and/or tin oxide and consist preferably of ITO thin films. Insulatable orientation control layers 4 for lining up liquid crystals in rubbing directions are formed thereon by rubbing the thin films of a high polymer, such as polyimide, with gauze or acetate flocked cloth, etc. Namely, this display element has the glass substrates 2 provided with the display electrodes. The transparent conductive films essentially consisting of the indium oxide and/or tin oxide having the surfaces of <=30Å in the max. width of the ruggedness in a range of 200 to 500Å horizontal direction length in the plane or the transparent conductive films formed by heat treating these films are used as the display electrodes. |
