A process for the selective oxidation of primary or secondary alcohols to aldehydes or ketones in which the alcohol contains other easily oxidisable groups such as for example amine, thioether and heterocyclic groups, which comprises placing the alcohol in contact with o- iodoxybenzoic acid, is described.
