PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low driving voltage, high contrast, wide visual angle and high reliability liquid crystal display by using a nematic liquid crystal composition containing a specified compound having a specified terminal structure as the first component. SOLUTION: In an active drive OCB element wherein a nematic liquid crystal mixture having a positive dielectric anisotropy and high resistance is contained within a sealed cell formed from two base plates each of which has a transparent electrode, the direction of rubbing of the aligned films put on the two upper and lower base plates are the same, the aligned films are arranged so that one of the angles of the pretilt direction of the liquid crystal on the aligned films with the base plate may be +θ, while the other angle is -θ, a biaxial phase difference film is disposed on the top of the upper base plate, polarizing plates are disposed on the top and bottom of the cell, and respective picture elements in the sealed cell are switched, a liquid crystal display in the nematic liquid crystal composition contains a compound having a terminal structure represented by the formula (wherein X is F, Cl, CF3 , OCF3 or the like) as the first component. |
